What
is Multiple Sclerosis(MS): The word sclerosis comes from a
Greek word for scarring or hardening. MS
is a disease that can affect your brain, spinal cord and the optic nerves in
your eyes. Some people have mild
symptoms while others have severe. MS
happens when your immune system attacks a fatty material called myelin, which is
a coating around nerve fiber, which wraps around your nerve fibers to protect
them. Without this outer shell, your
nerves become damaged, Scar tissue will form and those scars can act like stones
on the road, creating a bumpy ride for signals that pass as they travel between
the brain and body. When those signals
get slowed down or blocked, people with MS feels one or more symptoms. This damage means that your brain cannot send
signals through the body correctly and there is a cut off of connectivity between
different parts of the body, like the flickering of the bulb in the house. Your nerves also don’t work as they should to
help you move and feel. With MS, you may
have symptoms like feeling tired, problem with balance, muscle control, vision,
bladder issues, muscle weakness or spasms, numbness and tingling, pain, sexual
problems, depression, diminished brain functions, cognitive problem focusing or
remembering, dizziness and many other symptoms that affect your basic body
functions. Most people with MS have
attacks also called relapses when the condition gets worse. They are followed by recovery during which
time symptoms improve, for many the disease continues to get worse over time. Once diagnosed, MS stays with you for
life. Like with all auto immune disease
modern medicine can only help you manage the conditions and its symptoms. Studies have discovered that more women than
men have this disease.
