Oxygen is an important
factor for survival of human being.
Oxygen is required by our body for our cells to breakdown complex food
molecules into simple substances and finally for the end product, i.e.
energy. During this process, energy is
released which are utilized for all the cellular and other functions of the
body.
Oxygen is a colorless
and odorless gas and you can find that this element abundantly in the universe
and makes up more than 20% of the earth’s atmosphere. In human body, oxygen is the single most
abundant element, making up 65% of the body mass. You are breathing in oxygen nearly every
single second of day and oxygen is very important for your survival. We are going to look into the ways a human
body uses oxygen.
Oxygen that we inhale is
brought into the lungs via breathing where it is transported by red blood cells
to the entire body to be used. The
function of oxygen in the body relates to cellular respiration and this term is
used to describe the phase of the digestive process when food breaks down to
supply cells with energy. During this
cellular respiration, the cells use oxygen to break down sugar to produce
adenosine triphosphate or ATP. ATP is a
molecule that supplies cells with energy and the byproduct of the process is
CO2 and water.
You need to be aware
that health status, activity level, and the hydration are factors that affect
how much oxygen a person needs. Without
adequate oxygen, health problems are the first uninvited guests to your body
and we need to ensure that we get clean oxygen, adequate oxygen level in your
body to help in the chemical process.
You must have seen some people lying in the hospital with extraordinary
measures to get their oxygen levels up. Hyperbaric
oxygen therapy is
one way to increase oxygen levels and in certain circumstances required to
address a variety of health concerns.
