Role of Oxygen in human body and the basis for life

Oxygen is an important factor for survival of human being.  Oxygen is required by our body for our cells to breakdown complex food molecules into simple substances and finally for the end product, i.e. energy.  During this process, energy is released which are utilized for all the cellular and other functions of the body.

Oxygen is a colorless and odorless gas and you can find that this element abundantly in the universe and makes up more than 20% of the earth’s atmosphere.  In human body, oxygen is the single most abundant element, making up 65% of the body mass.  You are breathing in oxygen nearly every single second of day and oxygen is very important for your survival.  We are going to look into the ways a human body uses oxygen.

Oxygen that we inhale is brought into the lungs via breathing where it is transported by red blood cells to the entire body to be used.  The function of oxygen in the body relates to cellular respiration and this term is used to describe the phase of the digestive process when food breaks down to supply cells with energy.  During this cellular respiration, the cells use oxygen to break down sugar to produce adenosine triphosphate or ATP.  ATP is a molecule that supplies cells with energy and the byproduct of the process is CO2 and water.

You need to be aware that health status, activity level, and the hydration are factors that affect how much oxygen a person needs.  Without adequate oxygen, health problems are the first uninvited guests to your body and we need to ensure that we get clean oxygen, adequate oxygen level in your body to help in the chemical process.  You must have seen some people lying in the hospital with extraordinary measures to get their oxygen levels up.  Hyperbaric oxygen therapy is one way to increase oxygen levels and in certain circumstances required to address a variety of health concerns.

What are cells in human body and the need to know – 1st

You need to know that the different types of cells in your body have different specialized jobs to do and they do it very well provided you provide the right nutrition and right environment for it to remain healthy and grow.  In current modern times, it is this nutrition and environment and thinking that is lacking in human and the cause for every increase auto immune disease and cancers.  The specialization of cells depends almost always on the exaggeration of properties common to cells.  Cells that line the intestine have extended cell membranes that increases the amount of surface area that is available to absorb food.  Nerve cells can be very long, which makes them efficient in sending signals from the brain to the rest of the body.  Cells in heart muscles process a lot of energy so they have a large number of mitochondrion, the part of the cells where energy is made.

You also need to know that in all living being cells die and an adult male loses 98 million cells per minute.  At the same time, there is always another 98 million cells divided and replacing those that just died.  Just as you shed dead skins, cells, dead cells from internal organs pass through and out of the body with waste products.

One last point, though you are fascinated by incredible things around you, take for instance the car, the plane, and various other fascinating technology, the most important and impressive and complex technology is your human body.  Though we have technology to improve on lots of non-human technology, when it comes to cancer cure technology or medicine or other auto immune disease, why are humans helpless, you need to ask the question why and why are lots of new disease evolving in the recent years for which medical science has no answer.
